چکیده
To estimate the levels of folic acid, vitamin B12 and their relationship with ferritin in βthalassemia major children. Thirty children with β-thalassemia major in the age group of 4 to 8 years were studied for estimation of serum ferritin, folic acid and vitamin B12 over a period of one year. These tests were determined by means of Immulite 1000 analyzer. The statistical analysis of β-thalassemia major group compared with normal control group, showed significant (p<0.001) decreases in serum folic acid, vitamin B12 levels whereas increased concentration of ferritin in all 30 study subject. Negative and significant correlations were observed between ferritin and folic acid, and vitamin B12 in β-thalassemia major group. The present study found a significant association between ferritin and folic acid, vitamin B12 deficiency in children with β-thalassemia.

This study presented a mini review on folic acid deficiency and recommendations for its supplementation in thalassemia intermedia (TI). TI is a clinical condition which lies between thalassemia major and thalassemia minor. Although TI patients may not need regular blood transfusion, precise diagnosis and management are critical for the prevention of clinical complications and quality of life im...
متن کاملCorrelation of Serum Ferritin Level with Cardiac Function in β-Thalassemia Major
Background: The most important problem in regular transfusion dependent β-thalassemia major is cardiac dysfunction due to iron deposition in it. The aim of this study was to evaluate correlation between serum ferritin levels and cardiac function in β-thalassemia major in Mofid Hospital. Materials and Methods: There were 112 β-thalassemia patients with a mean age of 13.55± 6.12 years, of whom 49...

The objective of the present study was to determine zinc levels in patients with β-thalassemia major and its correlation with mat...
متن کاملAssociation between serum ferritin level, cardiac and hepatic T2-star MRI in patients with major β-thalassemia
Background Frequent blood transfusion is often associated with iron overload. Proper use of iron chelators to treat iron overload requires an accurate measurement of iron levels. Magnetic resonance T2-star (T2* MRI) can measure iron level in the heart and liver. Our goal was to see whether an association exists between serum ferritin level and T2* MRI in patients with major beta thalassemia. ...
متن کاملCorrelation between Heart and Liver Iron Levels Measured by MRI T2* and Serum Ferritin in Patients with β-thalassemia Major
Background Transfusion-induced iron overload leads to many complications in patients with β-thalassemia major. This study aimed to compare the level of iron stored in the liver and heart measured by MRI T2 * with ferritin levels in these patients. Materials and Methods This study was done on 52 patients with β-thalassemia major aged 7 to 29 years. Serum ferritin level was checked and heart and ...
